Huawei’s rumored three-pronged smartphone is said to be too advanced, causing issues with software customization and chip thermal management

The triple form factor is unusual for smartphones, but it can offer tremendous utility if the software is optimized and the device can keep pace with it. Huawei is rumored to be working on such a device, but has likely run into development issues stemming from the advanced form factor, with issues such as software and possibly the lack of an effective cooling solution causing a delay.

The unnamed Huawei smartphone triples to use one of the company’s Kirin 9000 series of chips; the lack of improved energy efficiency is likely to result in heat management problems

Google has released various updates that allow Android to work well with foldable smartphones, but since no manufacturer has even introduced a tri-fold handset, it seems that the company has run into problems. Keep in mind that, unlike other Chinese companies, Huawei’s HarmonyOS relies on the Android Open Source Project platform and runs its own set of apps. According to @jasonwill101’s statement on X, the software adaptation is still not ‘perfect’, suggesting that the triple-screen solution may not play well with the OS.

Furthermore, each of Huawei’s three-sided displays is likely to have an extreme level of thinness, as making each panel even slightly thicker would increase the bulk of the device when it’s fully folded. Unfortunately, the chipset has to be housed in one of the three panels, and the sheer thinness probably means there’s insufficient cooling for the SoC. The tipster doesn’t mention the exact SoC, but says it belongs to the Kirin 9000 series.

Even if it’s the latest Kirin 9010, it’s mass-produced on SMIC’s 7nm process, which means it lacks the power efficiency of competitors like the A17 Pro, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and Dimensity 9300+. Of course, there would be a degree of overheating, and Huawei will most likely not be able to find a way to overcome this obstacle.

It remains to be seen if the triple smartphone will be delayed or if the company can manage to find a solution to these software and hardware issues. Hopefully, with HarmonyOS Next, the user interface of this particular device will be ironed out and it could be a hit in China.
